La RS7 Sportback dispose d'un V8 biturbo de 4,0 litres développant 600 ps et un couple constant de 800 Nm entre 2 050 et 4 500 tr/min. La boîte automatique à huit rapports transmet cela via le quattro aux quatre roues, avec un différentiel central mécanique et un différentiel sport arrière optionnel pour plus d'agilité. Malgré ses 5 mètres de long et son poids, elle se conduit étonnamment directement.
Anecdote: la RS7 dispose de barres antiroulis actives qui se désolidarisent complètement lors du stationnement. Cela permet aux roues de bouger indépendamment l'une de l'autre pour un confort nettement amélioré sur les dos d'âne et les revêtements irréguliers.
